Tom Buhrow

Tom Buhrow has been Director General of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) since 2013. From 2020 until 2021 and from August to December 2022 he was also Director of ARD. Having studied history and political science as well as completed training as a journalist, he was a reporter, editor and correspondent in Washington DC and Paris and hosted the ARD news programme Tagesthemen. Since taking office at WDR, he has particularly advanced the broadcasting channel’s digital and cross-media restructuring process. Television, radio and internet are now more closely interlinked, content is specifically geared towards non-linear use and innovations have been initiated, for example in the area of AI. In 2019 the so-called Innovation Hub was established for the further strategic development of WDR, with a focus on trend research.
